Art versus Craft

I'm back at my day job, so it's harder to squeeze in art making, but yesterday I did make this necklace and earrings as a gift. It's creative, but not sure it qualifies as art. Anyone out there have any thoughts on art versus craft?

The difference between arts and crafts is very fine, often non-existent. Case in point would be the works of Liza Lou. Part of her studies were at the SF Academy of Art, where she was ridiculed for her use of beads in art. They told her she was a "craft" artist. After international recognition and a McArthur Foundation Fellowship (2002), she is now listed in their alumni list. She has gone on to create some fantastic art, many still with beads. Check her out.

I looked up Liza Lou and you're right...that's definitely art. I can't even image the hours she spent putting "kitchen" together. What patience. I'd like to see those in real time. I bet they glitter.

Art or craft its still beautiful. Who needs a label?

I'd love to live in a world where labels weren't necessary. In the art world though...at least in America that's highly unlikely. Graduate schools love to categorize art. Another artist friend failed to impress her instructors because they viewed her art as craft rather than "fine" art. Pooo Pooo Pee Do
